Stephen F. Lindsley - A History of Web Development Projects

In 1998 the World Wide Web was still in its infancy, accessed by a relatively small number of people over low bandwidth dial-up connections. At this point it had only been five years since the first browser, Mosaic, was invented.

Using an early version of Netscape, I created Stillness.com in the summer of 1998. Eventually it grew to contain personal and collaborative art, music and writing projects, along with a growing list of links.

Over the next few years, I gathered, organized and edited what is today the largest collection of English-language Taoist texts that exists online. Currently, a Google search for "Taoist Translations" returns Stillness.com as the primary resource.

What follows is a list of websites I created and/or managed, both for my employers and on a freelance basis. Unfortunately, most of these sites no longer exist, or exist in a different form. I have provided links to those that are still active.
A note from the panel: "We cannot be bought, but donations are appreciated."

Commerce Publishing Company

I began working at Commerce Publishing Company in 1998 as Production Editor of the Official St. Louis Visitors Guide and the USA Getaway Guide Travel Planner for Canadians.

Usagetaway.com
- This website accompanied the USA Getaway Guide, which was inserted into 1.2 million newspapers across Canada on a quarterly basis. The site and the publication included both English and French language editions. I designed and built the site and continued to manage it for several years.

Eventually, a venture capital group named Pfingsten Publishing acquired Commerce Publishing. At that time I became the web development manager for all of the company's websites, including Pfingstenpublishing.com.

Pfpsales.com - This project was a way for magazine ad salespeople across the country to access their sales data online. I created a system that generated an automatic data dowload each night from an IBM AS/400 mainframe system, and converted the data to automatically populate a SQL server database. I built a front-end web-based tool that allowed the salespeople to query this database in real time using Active Server Pages (ASPs), which greatly improved efficiency and cost savings.

I also developed and managed the websites associated with each of the trade publications, including:

Agentandbroker.com
- A monthly publication for independent insurance agents and brokers.

Lifeinsuranceselling.com
- In-depth, field-tested sales and marketing strategies for insurance producers.

Mortgageoriginator.com
- Sales and marketing tips for mortgage brokers, retail loan officers, lenders and other mortgage lending professionals. This site included extensive banner advertisements (many of which I designed) and a robust e-commerce section that generated significant income.

Decormagazine.com
- The Art and Framing Business Resource
Eventually I rose to the position of Senior Editor of Decor Magazine, contributing articles and providing editorial support for the oldest continually published magazine west of the Mississippi.

I also built and managed two websites supporting the trade shows associated with Decor Magazine, including

Artbuyerscaravan.com
(which later became) Decor-expo.com
- These sites featured interactive trade-show floorplan viewers, attendee and exhibitor enrollment forms, guest speaker biographies and dynamic show schedules.

Ladue News and Network

Laduenews.com
- In May of 2003 I began working at the Ladue News, which was then a division of Pulitzer Publishing. I created a new website that allowed the viewer to read each page of the weekly publication online. I also built and managed an e-commerce system for sales of photographs from social events such as the annual Veiled Prophet Ball.

Networkstlouis.com - My main role at the Ladue News was Editor and manager of Network, a monthly St. Louis business publication. Apart from writing, editing and managing the production of this magazine from start to finish, including a complete re-design, I created and managed the associated website, which offered the bulk of the magazine's content online each month, including extensive photography.

Nisanet.com
- In 2005 I became Materials Editor at NISA Investment Advisors. My tasks included publishing a bi-annual survey of Nuclear Decommissioning Trusts, both in print and online, as well as generating quarterly reports for clients and managing and updating both the external NISA website and the intranet.

Freelance Web Projects:

Beverlyhillsjewelry.com -- Retail Jewelry at Wholesale Prices
The beverlyhillsjewelry.com site was created in March, 2000, to showcase fashion jewelry that was being offered online by a wholesale distributor. The site offered rings, necklaces and tennis bracelets at discount prices, all available through a secure e-commerce shopping cart system. Within a few months, a buyer came along and purchased the entire inventory, so although the site was very successful it was active for less than a year.

Memoriesunlimited.com - A retail scrapbooking shop
Memoriesunlimited.com was created as a way for a West St. Louis County scrapbook retailer to sell supplies online and provide news and information for its customers. At the time there was nothing like it online, and it expanded continually for 5 years.

Deltastrings.com - Vintage Guitar Sales and Repairs
Delta Strings was the premier destination for Harmony, Kay, Silvertone and National ResoPhonic guitar sales and service. Its owner, Mike King, was acknowledged worldwide as an expert in these vintage guitars, along with vintage amplifiers and reverb units. The website was a showcase for the inventory of instruments and accessories, plus information about expert guitar repair services. I personally photographed hundreds of guitars and amplifiers, creating custom artwork for the site.

Staroftomorrow.com
- A website for the band TripStar
I launched the original version of the website in 2002 for this popular St. Louis band.

Womenrock.org
- An organization to promote female rock musicians
I created and managed the website, including in-depth profiles of female musicians and a constantly updated list of upcoming events.

Magnafitness.com
- This website supported a health club in the St. Louis area. Although the site no longer exists, I still own this domain name and it is currently for sale.

Vote4alex.com
- The official website for Alex von zur Muehlen's 2002 bid for the Missouri State Representative in the 82nd District. He was defeated by fewer than 800 votes.

Billkohn.com
- Bill Kohn was a Professor of Fine Art at Washington University in St. Louis and an award-winning landscape painter in acrylics and watercolors. He was the recipient of the 2002 Missouri Arts Award, and his collectors included the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Springfield Missouri Art Museum and Chase Manhattan Bank. I created and managed the website in close collaboration with Mr. Kohn.

SPACE
Spacestl.com
- This website was created in 2003 to support a fine dining establishment located in the Hill Neighborhood in South St. Louis. It included menus, wine lists, special event reservations and extensive documentation of the unique decor in the restaurant.

Honeyshakers.com
- Also in 2003 I created and managed the website for The Honeyshakers, a three-woman musical group in St. Louis.

Northwestcoffee.com
- In 2005 I re-designed and re-launched the Northwest Coffee website, including menus, video clips and wholesale online coffee bean sales. This site is still active.

Art-Patrol.com
- In March of 2007 I launched a personal blog project called Art-Patrol.com. Art-Patrol is the only comprehensive online resource for fine art galleries, museums, groups, openings, events and reviews in the St. Louis, Missouri area. The site has become well-known in the St. Louis art community, and well-loved by artists and gallery owners alike.

Thenu-artseries.org
- In the Spring of 2009 I re-designed and relaunched the website for the Nu-Art Series and its associated Metropolitan Gallery. I designed, built and continue to manage the site for this art organization.
